HONOLULU - The No. 11 SDSU women's water polo team got off to a disappointing start on their annual trip to Hawaii on Thursday, losing in conference play to No. 5 University of Hawai'i by a score of 17-7. The loss snaps the Aztecs' three-game win streak and leaves them still in search of their first conference win of the season.
SDSU (14-10; 0-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) received an early lift when senior driver Sarah Brady beat Hawai'i goalkeeper Serena Bredin for a 1-0 lead just 1:40 into the contest. That would be the last time the Aztecs controlled the scoreboard, however, as three straight Hawai'i goals gave the Rainbow Wahine a 3-1 lead midway through the second quarter.
Then, with 4:29 to go before half, junior Leanne Ford put the Aztecs within one with a 6-on-5 goal, her team-leading 37th of the year and one of two on the day. An offensive outbreak would then ensue, as both teams traded goals until back-to-back scores by Hawai'i's Monika Eggens and Saara Majuri put SDSU in a 6-3 hole at halftime.
The Aztecs again found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard early in the third quarter, as Hawai'i senior Dagmar Genee extended the Wahine lead to four at the 7:29 mark. Sophomore Amber Pezzolla would answer back less than a minute later, but four Hawai'i goals over the next four minutes gave the Wahine a nearly insurmountable 11-4 lead. SDSU would be over-matched by a superior Hawai'i team the rest of the way, getting goals from Brady, Kimmy Keach and Ford but surrendering six more to finish a 17-7 Hawai'i victory.
