SAN DIEGO - The No. 11 San Diego State women's water polo team (17-10; 0-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) proved to be no joking matter on April Fool's Day, defeating the Brown Bears by a score of 17-6.
SDSU hopped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a Meaghan Poland turn-and-shoot score from five meters within the first minute. Following a goal by sophomore Amber Pezzolla, Brown would get on the board with a Katherine Stanton strike just inside the right post. The Aztecs would respond quickly, however, as goals by senior Sarah Brady and Pezzolla, her second, put the Aztecs up 4-1. Brady would then convert on a penalty shot with a minute left to give the SDSU a 5-2 lead at the end of the first.
The second quarter was more of the same, with senior Ashley Novack joining the scoring parade on a strong move within two meters. Following Brady's third, goals by Brown's Katherine Stanton, Woods and Sarah Presant would cut the SDSU lead to three.
The rest of the game would be a breeze for the Aztecs. Junior Leanne Ford scored on a skip shot for her team-leading 45th goal of the season, Meaghan Poland would score her third and fourth points of the afternoon and SDSU would seal up a 17-6 final victory, moving them to 17-10 on the season.
On a side note, junior goalkeeper Kelly Campoli had another outstanding outing in net. The returning back-to-back All-America sensation made several point-blank saves in the game, demoralizing Brown for much of the contest.
SDSU will be back in action tomorrow at the Aztec Aquaplex, as they take on No. 8 Arizona State at noon PT and Fresno Pacific at 4 p.m. PT.
