SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's water polo junior Kelly Campoli, sophomore Amber Pezzolla and junior Meaghan Poland each earned all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honorable mention honors, the league announced Wednesday morning. The 2011 campaign marks the third consecutive year in which Campoli has been recognized by the MPSF, while it is the second year in a row for Pezzolla and the first time for Poland.
Campoli has been nothing short of spectacular since she arrived on The Mesa for the 2009 campaign. The Lake Forest, Calif., native has racked up at least 300 saves in each of her three seasons, making her already the all-time career saves leader in school history. This season, she led all MPSF goalkeepers in saves with 334, finishing second in saves per game with 10.44, while starting 32 of the Aztecs' 35 games, which was one off the MPSF high. The junior also assisted on 15 SDSU goals while compiling 22 steals. Campoli has now earned all-MPSF honorable mention honors all three seasons at San Diego State.
Pezzolla, meanwhile, avoided a sophomore slump by starting in 33 games, scoring 39 goals and assisting on 38 others. The speedy swimmer also stole a team-high 76 balls over the course of the season. During her freshman campaign in 2010, Pezzolla was named to the all-conference second team after leading the Aztecs in scoring (54), assists (48), steals (78) and ejections drawn (59).
Poland, a Lake Elsinore High School product, started all 35 games and finished the year with 53 goals, good for second-most on the team. The junior also owned SDSU's highest scoring percentage, shooting .500 from the field. In addition, her 1.51 goals-per-game average ranked 14th in the MPSF, the nation's premier conference, helping SDSU to a league-high 384 goals, a number which exceeded the second-highest total by 48 (Arizona State). Poland also added 30 steals and drew 58 ejections, which was three off of the team lead (Ronni Gautschi, 61).
The three San Diego State honorees mark the fifth consecutive season in which multiple Aztecs have earned all-conference accolades.
SDSU recently finished its season with a record of 20-15, its school-record sixth consecutive 20-win campaign.
