LV Collegiate Showdown Final Results

On a day when the average score per round increased by more than four strokes, the San Diego State women's golf team moved up two spots in the team standings to tie for second place with Pepperdine Wednesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown in Boulder City, Nev. The Aztecs completed their fall schedule by logging their third top-five finish of 2011, posting a final-round 309 to bring their 54-hole total to 20-over 884 at the par-72, 6,329-yard Boulder Creek Golf Club.

SDSU, which was 13th at the same event a year ago, had two players finish in the individual top 15 and all five place in the top 50 in the 89-golfer field. The team was led by junior Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.), who landed in a five-way tie for eighth place at 3-over 219. Wong carded her second consecutive 76 in the final 18 holes with a team-high five birdies to give her 14 for the tournament.

Despite not tallying any birdies in the final round, senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenberg, Sweden) boasted the team's most consistent 18 holes with 16 pars and a pair of bogeys for her second straight 74. Enarsson's 74 tied as the third-best round on the day and moved her from a tie for 27th into a tie for 13th with a 4-over 220.

Freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was the third Aztec in the top 25 with an 8-over 224, including a final-round 79, to tie for 24th place. After starting the day with a bogey and four consecutive pars, junior Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) had five bogeys, two double bogeys and two birdies over the next nine holes. Clark ended with three pars and a bogey for an 81 to drop her from 27th into a tie for 36th with a 227.

Sophomore Tessa The (Los Altos, Calif.), who had the team's low round Tuesday with a 72, was at 3-over heading into her final four holes, but then had a triple bogey on the par-3 second hole and back-to-back bogeys on the next two holes. She finished with an 8-over 80, moving her down five slots on the individual leaderboard into a tie for 49th with a 13-over 229.

UC Davis, which was the highest ranked team entering the event at No. 21, claimed the team title by 15 strokes with a 5-over 869. Pepperdine's Grace Na utilized a final-round 74 to lead wire-to-wire and earn medalist honors by two strokes over Idaho's Kayla Mortellaro with a three-day total of 7-under 209.

The Aztecs will be out of action until 2012, when they open their spring schedule on Feb. 5, at the Arizona Lady Wildcat Invitational in Oro Valley, Ariz.
