THIS WEEK
San Diego State concludes it 2011-12 regular season with a dual meet against the University of San Diego on Saturday, Jan. 28, at noon at the Aztec Aquaplex. In addition, the SDSU divers will be in action on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 27-28) at the Air Force Diving Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo.
HEAD COACH Mike Shrader
San Diego State head coach Mike Shrader is in his fifth season with the Aztecs and has compiled a dual meet record of 65-13 (.833) during his tenure. Shrader was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year each of the past three seasons (co-coach in 2009). Including eight seasons as the head coach at Nevada, his career record stands at 154-25-1 (.858).
LAST TIME OUT
San Diego State recorded a pair of wins on Jan. 14 in a double dual meet at the Fresno State Aquatic Center. The Aztecs notched victories over the host Bulldogs (174.50-114.50) and Cal State Bakersfield (189-90) to improve to 15-0 in dual meet competition this season. Eight different swimmers won races for San Diego State as the Aztecs set 11 pool records during the meet.
Katelyn Weddle was a double winner for SDSU as she won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke with times of 1:04.25 and 2:18.20 respectively. Also recording two wins for the Aztecs was Gemma Johnson. The junior from Australia won the 100 fly in 56.22 and the 200 fly in 2:08.77. In the diving, Kristen Meier turned in the top scores on both boards with a 283.65 on the 1-meter and later recorded a 333.30 on the 3-meter springboard.
SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Katelyn Weddle became the latest Aztec to garner Mountain West Swimmer of the Week honors. She picked up the award for her effort in the double dual on Jan. 14 plus her win in the 200 breast against Tulane earlier in the week.
DIVER OF THE WEEK
Senior Kristen Meier was named the Mountain West Conference Diver of the week winning both the one and three-meter board in the meet vs. Tulane (Jan. 10) and at the double dual vs. Fresno State and CSU Bakersfield (Jan. 14). It was her fifth award this season and the ninth of her two-year Aztec career.
SENIOR DAY
Three San Diego State seniors were honored prior to the five-team meet at the Aquaplex on Jan. 6. That trio included freestyle/butterfly specialist Shannon Bray along with divers Kristen Meier and Aina Eill.
MARQUENIE QUALIFIES FOR AUSTRALIAN TRIALS
Sophomore Kelly Marquenie qualified for Australia's 2012 Olympic Trials in two events. She won the 800 meter freestyle with a mark of 8:58.28 to meet the standard for Australia's Olympic trials. She later had a 200 meter freestyle spilt of 2:05.81 during the 400 meter free race that also qualified for the trials.
THE STREAK CONTINUES
With its victories over Fresno State and Cal State Bakersfield on Jan. 14, SDSU has now won its last 37 straight dual meets dating back to the 2009-10 season. Its last loss came against Wyoming on Jan. 29, 2010, in Laramie. San Diego State also has a streak of 49 straight dual meet wins against non-conference opponents. The last loss to a non-MWC team was a defeat at North Texas on Nov. 17, 2006. In current Head Coach Mike Shrader's four seasons at SDSU, the Aztecs have not lost a dual meet to a non-conference foe.
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
San Diego State completed its second consecutive undefeated home season during its 2010-11 campaign and will look to make in three straight with a victory this weekend. After winning their first nine home meets this season, the Aztecs have now won their last 26 consecutive dual meets at home. SDSU's record at the Aztec Aquaplex stands at 35-3 since the facility opened for the 2007-08 season.
MWC CHAMPIONSHIPS
Up next for the Aztec swimmers and divers is the 2012 Mountain West Championship meet to be held Feb. 22-25 in Oklahoma City, Okla.
