COLLEGE PARK, Md. - No. 8 San Diego State defeated Maryland, 8-4, on the final day of the Terrapin Invitational Sunday morning. With the victory, SDSU finishes tournament action and starts the season with a perfect 3-0 record. The Terps, meanwhile, fall to 2-1.
The Aztecs never trailed in the game and received four first-half goals from Meaghan Poland to help the visitors to a 4-3 lead at halftime.
The Terrapins cut San Diego State's lead to 5-4 at the 1:41 mark of the third quarter, but the Aztecs responded with two goals in the final 73 seconds of the frame to take a three-goal cushion into the final eight minutes.
Poland, who was nearly unstoppable in the first half, was equally as dominant on the defensive side as she helped SDSU shutout the Terrapins in the fourth quarter. The Aztecs, meanwhile, tacked on another goal to emerge with the win.
All told, Poland led all players with four goals and was joined in the scoring column by Ford, Amber Pezzolla, Carina Carballo and Tori Long. Goalkeeper Kelly Campoli finished with four saves.
San Diego State returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when it plays at Long Beach State. First sprint is set for noon PT.
