CORONA DEL MAR, Calif. - The ninth-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team split its two games on day one of the UC Irvine Invitational. The Aztecs upset No. 8 San Jose State, 7-4, but were then defeated by top-ranked Stanford, 10-3. With its effort, SDSU sits at 9-3 on the season.

The Aztecs held a 2-1 lead over SJSU after one quarter and were held scoreless in the second as the game moved to halftime with the score deadlocked at 2-2. The third period was tightly contested, but San Diego State scored three times while allowing two goals to take a 5-4 lead into the final eight minutes. In the fourth, the Aztecs turned up the defensive intensity and kept the Spartans off the scoreboard. Offensively, SDSU scored twice to emerge with the three-goal lead.

Leanne Ford scored a game-high two goals, while Taelor Moreno, Alex Ford, Amber Pezzolla, Samantha Voigt and Meaghan Poland each scored one goal apiece. Kelly Campoli added a game-high 11 saves in net.

In the second game of the day against the Cardinal, the Aztecs struggled to score. Stanford led, 3-1, after one quarter and 4-2 at halftime. In the final two periods, Stanford scored six goals, while San Diego State was only able to find the back of the net once as the Aztecs suffered their third loss of the campaign.

SDSU received its scoring from three freshmen in Anique Hermann, Juliana Matos and Tori Long. Campoli stopped a game-high 15 shots in goal.

The Aztecs return to action on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT when they face either No. 4 California or No. 5 Arizona State in Irvine, Calif.
