Arizona Day 1 Results

Playing in its first tournament in over three months, the San Diego State women's golf team shot a first-round 22-over 310 Sunday to tie for 10th place in day one action of the Arizona Wildcat Invitational at the par-72, 6,321-yard Golf Club at Vistoso. The 34th-ranked Aztecs are knotted with North Texas and are just one stroke out of ninth place and three out of eighth.

SDSU has two golfers in the individual top 25, as junior classmates Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) and Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) both shot a 3-over 75 to tie for 25th. Clark was even par through the first 16 holes with two birdies against two bogeys, but then triple bogeyed the par-4 eighth. Wong had one of just three eagles in the field on the day, doing so on her third hole, the par-5 12th. Like Clark, Wong, however, also triple bogeyed the eighth hole to spoil what otherwise could have been an even-par round.

Sophomore Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.) competing in her first event of the season, carded the best round of her Aztec career with a 5-over 77. Schneider, who is playing as an individual, was 4-over through the first nine holes but then settled down with eight pars in her next nine to finish the day in a tie for 38th place.

SDSU senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) had four bogeys, two double bogeys and a birdie on the par-4 11th to tie for 49th with a 79, while junior Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy) is two strokes behind her with an 81 to tie for 60th. Freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejas, Calif.) was at 3-over through her first eight holes, but then ran into major trouble with an 11 on the par-5 18th and finished the day at 14-over to tie for 73rd.

Host Arizona sits atop the standings as the only team under par, owning a four-stroke advantage over second-place and top-ranked UCLA with a 3-under 285. Wildcat Manon Gidali had a perfect round with five birdies to go with 13 pars for a 5-under 67 to finish two strokes better than Denver's Kelly Drack.

San Diego State will be paired with North Texas and Northern Arizona for Monday's second round, starting at 8:09 a.m. MT from the 10th hole. Live results are available on golfstat.com.
