LOS ANGELES - The sixth-ranked San Diego State water polo team was dealt a 13-5 defeat at No. 3 USC Friday night. The Aztecs fall to 11-5 overall and 0-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action. The Women of Troy, meanwhile, improve to 12-3 (2-1 MPSF).
SDSU fell behind early, 3-1, after one quarter and trailed, 3-2, in the opening stages of the second quarter. USC, however, went on a scoring spree and carried a 10-2 lead deep into the third period before San Diego State scored with 24 seconds left.
The Aztecs found themselves facing a 10-goal deficit entering the fourth quarter and nearly played even with USC. At the final horn, San Diego State, which scored twice, but allowed three Women of Troy goals, ultimately suffered an eight-goal defeat.
Taelor Moreno led the Aztecs with two goals, while Meaghan Poland, Leanne Ford and Emily Whalen each scored once. Goalkeeper Kelly Campoli made four stops in net.
San Diego State returns to action on Saturday when it plays at UC Irvine at 1 p.m. PT.
