SAN DIEGO - The No. 8 San Diego State water polo team cruised to an 11-5 win over Bucknell in their first game of the Aztec Invitational presented by Courtyard Marriott. With the win, SDSU improved to 13-6, while the Bison dropped to 10-15 on the year.
The Aztecs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period of play. Four different players scored for SDSU in the first period with goals coming from Amber Pezzolla, Samantha Voigt, Meaghan Poland and freshman Anique Hermann.
The Aztecs continued their stellar play scoring the next two goals in the second period increasing their lead to six goals with scores coming from Hermann and Pezzolla. SDSU held the Bison scoreless until 3:00 in the second period when Mackenzie Perry would skip one in for a score.
The same four SDSU players would score in the third period when Pezzolla, Voigt, Poland and Hermann. Freshman goalie Morgan Klingfus would get the start in the fourth period for the Aztecs making three saves. Alana Burgess, Emily Whalen and Amber Pezzolla recorded two assists in the win as well. The Aztecs would be victorious over Bucknell with the final score of 11-5. SDSU returns to the pool when they face Indiana this afternoon. Game time is set for 2:15 p.m.
