Battle At RB Inn - Round 1

After rain delayed the opening round, the Battle at Rancho Bernardo Inn finally got underway Monday for the host San Diego State women's golf team as it logged an 18-over 306 to find itself in 10th place out of 16 teams. The No. 41 Aztecs, who are one of 12 squads in the top 50 nationally in this week's field, are just one stroke out of ninth and four out of the top five at the par-72, 6,267-yard Rancho Bernardo Inn Championship Golf Course.

SDSU was led by senior Malin Enarsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), who carded an opening effort of 1-over 73, to find herself in a seven-way tie for ninth place. Enarsson started the day with a birdie and then notched pars on her next seven holes. She finished out the round with six pars, three bogeys and a birdie on the par-5 12th hole.

Aztec junior Christine Wong (Richmond, B.C.) tied for the field lead with her 16 pars against just one bogey and a double bogey on the par-4 15th hole, putting her in a tie for 22nd with a 75. The team's third golfer, Alessia Knight (Bologna, Italy), had an up and down final nine with three bogeys, two birdies, two pars and two double bogeys to tie for 48th with a 78.

Junior Gina Clark (Murrieta, Calif.) finished strong with seven pars on her final eight holes to tie for 65th with an 80, while freshman Amy Alston (Mission Viejo, Calif.) rounded out the Aztec starting five in a tie for 80th with an 83. SDSU sophomore Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.) and redshirt freshman Kristina Lynn (Carlsbad, Calif.) are both competing as individuals and are tied for 68th and 74th respectively.

Tulane, which is ranked 37th nationally, is atop the team standings by two strokes over No. 8 Arizona State and No. 3 USC with a 5-over 293. The Green Wave has each of the top two golfers, including day-one leader Maribel Lopez Porras, who fired a 3-under 69 and is one of just four under par.

Teams play the final 18 holes starting Tuesday morning as early as 7:30 a.m. PDT from both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees. Live stats are available on line at goaztecs.com and golfstat.com.
