TEMPE, Ariz. -
San Diego State-Arizona State Final Box
Fifth-ranked San Diego State traveled to Tempe, Ariz., and was downed by No. 6 Arizona State, 12-3, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The loss drops the Aztecs to 11-4 (0-2 MPSF) on the season, while the Sun Devils improve to 15-2 (1-0 MPSF).
ASU's Shannon Haas, who dented the scoreboard seven times, got the home team off to a great start by scoring the game's first two goals of the game, which put SDSU into an early hole. The Aztecs cut their deficit in half when Taelor Moreno scored with just under three minutes to play in the first quarter. Annabelle Carter scored with 54 seconds left to propel the Sun Devils to a 3-1 lead.
Leanne Ford opened the scoring in the second frame with a goal on San Diego State's first possession. Unfortunately for the Aztecs, it would be the only time they would find the back of the net in the first half. ASU, meanwhile, answered with three goals in the final 2:42 to take a 6-2 lead at halftime.
San Diego State limited Arizona State to one Haas goal in the third quarter, but could not connect on any of its shot attempts and the game moved to the fourth with the Sun Devils leading, 7-2.
ASU stopped any thought of an Aztec comeback as it scored five unanswered goals to open the fourth quarter. San Diego State added a Meaghan Poland goal with 16 seconds left in regulation to provide the final margin.
The Aztecs return to action next Friday when they travel to USC. First sprint is scheduled for 5 p.m. PT in Los Angeles.
