ORANGE, Calif. - Ninth-ranked San Diego State secured its seventh-straight 20-win campaign as it posted a pair of convincing victories on Saturday at Chapman University. The Aztecs defeated the hosts, 22-2, and returned to Allred Pool only to beat Redlands, 12-5. The two decisions improved SDSU's record to 20-9 on the season.
The Aztecs jumped all over the Panthers, who are the sixth-ranked team in Division III, with eight first-quarter goals. San Diego State led 9-0 in the second period before Chapman dented the scoreboard with 1:05 left in the half. SDSU responded to the Panther goal with two more goals in the final 50 seconds to lead 11-1 at the mid-way point.
The Aztecs continued to have their way with Chapman as they outscored the hosts, 6-1, in the third and 5-0 in the fourth quarter to post the 20-goal win.
Leanne Ford led all players with six goals on seven shot attempts, including three goals in the decisive first period. Alana Burgess, Carina Carballo, Tori Long, Amber Pezzolla and Meaghan Poland all scored two goals each, while Kelli Boling, Alex Ford, Adison Gosselin, Juliana Matos, Taelor Moreno and Samantha Voigt found the back of the cage once.
Kelly Campoli and Morgan Klingfus shared time in net with Campoli logging three saves in the first half and Klingfus making four stops in the final 16 minutes.
Two hours later, the Aztecs returned to the pool and opposed the Bulldogs, the second-ranked squad in Division III. Redlands's Joy Corona scored the game's first goal, but SDSU responded with consecutive goals from Anique Hermann and Pezzolla to take the lead. Jaime Nippert, however, scored for the Bulldogs and the score was tied after eight minutes.
Burgess scored 27 seconds into the second quarter, which spurred a 7-0 run in the period, and the Aztecs pulled ahead 9-2 at halftime. At one point, Pezzolla scored five unanswered goals before Carballo added a goal right before intermission.
The scoring slowed considerably in the second half with SDSU outscoring Redlands, 3-1, in the third period. The game eventually moved into the fourth quarter with the Aztecs ahead, 12-3. In the final stanza, the Bulldogs scored twice to give the game its final margin.
Pezzolla finished the game with six goals with Hermann adding two. Burgess, Carballo, Long and Poland each scored once for the Aztecs. Campoli, meanwhile, posted eight saves.
Leanne Ford's six goals vs. Chapman and Pezzolla's half dozen vs. Redlands are the most scored in a single game this season for San Diego State. The previous high was Poland's five vs. Long Beach State, Wagner and Marist.
SDSU returns to action on Friday when it competes for the Harper Cup at UC San Diego. The Aztecs have never relinquished the Cup in 10 previous battles with the Tritons. First sprint is set for 6 p.m. PT.
