SAN DIEGO - The eighth-ranked and seventh-seeded San Diego State women's water polo team was unable to prevent No. 3 and second-seeded UCLA from pulling away late as the Aztecs dropped a 9-5 decision on Friday in the quarterfinal round at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship.
With the loss, SDSU falls to 21-10 on the year and will face the No. 6 seed, San Jose State, which lost to third-seeded USC on Friday.
The Aztecs trailed 2-1 after one quarter and the game was tied at 2-2 with under two minutes to play in the second period. Unfortunately for San Diego State, UCLA's Emily Donohoe scored with 1:30 left in the half to break the tie and the Bruins enjoyed a 3-2 lead at the intermission.
In the third and fourth quarters, UCLA scored three goals in each frame, while the Aztecs managed just three goals total in the second half, which provided the final margin.
Anique Hermann shared game-high honors with the Bruins' Emily Greenwood after they finished with three goals apiece. Leanne Ford and Amber Pezzolla added single tallies for the Aztecs. In goal, Kelly Campoli made eight saves for SDSU.
San Diego State returns to action tomorrow when they face SJSU at 12:30 p.m. PT at Stanford.
