SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's water polo program lost a friend and one of its pioneers as former club coach Jamie Stuart passed recently.
In honor of Stuart, the Aztecs wore his initials on their suits at the recently completed Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship last week at Stanford. The program will also dedicate the 2013 alumni to him next season.
As San Diego State celebrates the 40th anniversary of Title IX, Aztec Water Polo remembers Stuart as a pioneer in leading the SDSU club team's transition to varsity (1991-1994). During these years, Stuart coached the team to national prominence, including a runner up finish in the 1993 USA Collegiate National Championship.
Stuart coached many SDSU collegiate All-Americans, most notably USA Water Polo Hall of Famer and USA Olympian, Gubba Sheehy.
Stuart spent the early 2000s coaching the Dolphins Club in Perth, Australia, as well as the U-20 state team in Western Australia before returning to coach the San Diego Shores 18-U girls team that included current Aztecs Anique Hermann and Samantha Pugh.
