SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team will travel to the Pacific Northwest for the 2013 NCAA Regional, scheduled for May 16-18, at the par-72, 7,308-yard Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash., as announced Monday by the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee. The Aztecs, ranked 42nd in the latest Golfweek-Sagarin ratings, earned a No. 9 seed for their 15th consecutive NCAA regional berth and 18th overall since the field expanded to include regional competition in 1989.
SDSU, under the direction of 10th-year head coach Ryan Donovan, secured one of 53 at-large bids after tying for second at the 2013 Mountain West Championships, May 3-5, in Tucson, Ariz. A total of 81 NCAA Division I schools overall garnered invitations to play in one of the six regional events that will also be played concurrently in Tempe, Ariz. (Arizona State), Baton Rouge, La. (LSU), Columbus, Ohio (Ohio State), Fayetteville, Ark. (Arkansas) and Tallahassee, Fla. (Florida State).
Washington State will serve as host to the Pullman Regional, which features 13 squads and five individuals in addition to the Aztecs. The top five teams and the low individual not on an advancing team from each of the six regionals will move on to the national championships, slated for May 28-June 2, at Capital City Club in Alpharetta, Ga.
SDSU has qualified for nationals 27 times in school history, including six times (1999, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012) since the regional format made its debut. The Aztecs captured thier first-ever NCAA regional crown in 2011, after finishing first by seven strokes as the No. 2 seed in Tucson, Ariz., followed by a runner-up performance at Stanford, Calif., last season.
Despite a roster dominated by transfers and freshmen, the Aztecs have logged seven top-five finishes this year, including the team title at their lone home tournament of the season at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic, March 11-12, in Chula, Vista, Calif. SDSU will be making its second trip to the Evergreen State this year after placing fifth at the season-opening Kikkor Golf Husky Invitational, Sept. 17-18, in Bremerton, Wash., near Seattle.
Teams will play 18 holes (54 total) each of the three days following a practice round on Wednesday, May 15. Live hole-by-hole stats will be available on golfstat.com, as well as goaztecs.com for all three rounds.
