SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2012-13 academic year. The national honor is the first-ever for the program.
"We are extremely proud of this accomplishment as a team," head coach Mike Friesen said. "The hard work they have put in the classroom and on the field has been phenomenal. It is no surprise that these academic achievements are paralleled by our success on the field. The character of the players in our program translates into every aspect of their lives."
In 2012-13, aside from excelling on the pitch, SDSU succeeded in the classroom. The Aztecs posted a team grade-point average of 3.16. On the field, San Diego State enjoyed its best season ever, going 21-2-1, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament and winning both the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles before ultimately finishing seventh in the final NSCAA poll.
At the conference level in 2012-13, eight Aztecs were named to the academic all-Mountain West team. The eight honorees were the program's most since 2007, when nine earned their way onto the squad.
The Aztecs just recently completed another championship campaign as they successfully defended their conference regular-season and tournament crowns en route to their second straight NCAA tournament berth. Over the last two seasons, SDSU has won 34 games, which matches the most in a two-year period in team history.
