PORTLAND, Ore. - San Diego State men's soccer players Evyn Hewett and Blake Hylen were among the first four roster players named to the Portland Timbers U-23 team that will participate in the 2013 Premier Development League, the club announced today.
Hewett is a second-year Timbers U-23 member after contributing to a 2012 squad that allowed just 16 goals, which was tied for the fewest in the Western Conference. Hylen, meanwhile, is a newcomer to the roster.
A defender, Hewett completed his sophomore campaign this past season having played and started all 19 games. The La Palma, Calif., native tallied seven points (two goals, three assists), which was the seventh-most on the team and most among Aztec defenders.
Hylen, a goalkeeper from San Diego, played and started 12 games during his junior campaign. The Torrey Pines High School product had a goals-against average of 1.53 and made 50 saves in 2012.
The Timbers U-23s open the 2013 season Thursday, May 16, as they play host to the Seattle Sounders FC U-23 as part of Providence Health & Fitness Day at JELD-WEN Field. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. PT.
