SAN DIEGO - Five San Diego State water polo student-athletes earned all-academic honors from the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) on Friday. The five award winners surpasses last season's total and is the program's most since six were recognized in 2012.
Junior Anique Hermann and freshman Alyssa Diacono landed on the Outstanding team, which is comprised of student-athletes who posted a GPA between 4.00-3.71. This marks the third straight year in which Hermann has been honored and the second time she has been an Outstanding performer.
Redshirt sophomore Nika Sedghi was recognized for the first time of her career, earning her way onto the Superior squad. Those on the Superior team turned a GPA between 3.70-3.41.
Junior Carina Carballo and sophomore Taylor Gums, meanwhile, were named to the Excellent team (3.40-3.20 GPA). Carballo picks up her second straight Excellent award and has been honored in all three of her seasons on Montezuma Mesa. Gums is a first-time ACWPC all-academic selection.
No. 17 San Diego State finished the campaign with a 23-12 record and won the first-ever regular-season GCC championship. The Aztecs' 23 victories matched the 2013 total and represented the program's most since 2008 when that group won 31 games. SDSU has now won 20 or more games nine straight years.
