Oct. 13, 2014 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - -- San Diego State football's Donnel Pumphrey (Las Vegas, Nev./Canyon Springs High) has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced Monday. It is the second career award for the sophomore and second in three weeks.
Pumphrey rushed for a career-high 246 yards and two touchdowns on 20 attempts, averaging 12.3 yards per carry, as the Aztecs defeated New Mexico, 24-14, Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 246 yards were the 13th most in program history and the seventh most in the nation this year. He became the 19th player in school history to rush for at least 200 yards (40th occasion overall). It was also his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season (in six contests) and seventh of his career (in 19 games), the latter which is tied for 13th all-time at SDSU.
It was Pumphrey's fifth career game with multiple rushing touchdowns and sixth overall with multiple touchdowns (also has one with one rushing, one receiving).
Including in the 246 yards was career-long 93-yard touchdown, which is tied for the second-longest rush in the Division I era and tied for the third longest in program history. Pumphrey, who added a 7-yard reception, helped San Diego State improve to 6-1 over his career when he rushes for at least 100 yards and 8-3 when he records at least one rushing touchdowns.
On the season, Pumphrey has 807 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns on 119 attempts (6.8 avg.). He ranks in a tie for third in the nation in rushing touchdowns (11), tied for fifth in points per game (12.00) (tied for fourth among non-kickers), ninth in rushing yards per game (134.50), 14th in rushing yards per carry (6.78) and 19th in all-purpose yards per game (145.67).
Pumphrey and the Aztecs (3-3, 2-1 MW) welcome Hawai'i (2-4, 1-0 MW) to Qualcomm Stadium on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. PT.
