COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore Anika Apostalon has been named Mountain West Swimmer of the Week for competition from October 20-26, 2014. It is the fourth Mountain West weekly accolade for Apostalon in her young career and the first this season.
Apostalon led the Aztecs to a dual-meet victory against Hawai`i (157-132) on Oct. 24 as she won two individual events and one relay. The second-year Aztec from Albuquerque, N.M. (Albuquerque Academy) won the 100-yard freestyle with an NCAA B-cut time of 49.88. That time currently ranks first in the Mountain West and 11th in the NCAA. It also set an Aztec Aquaplex record, the first sub-50.00 100-free at the facility.
Apostalon also posted a time of 1:50.33 to win the 200-yard freestyle, currently the second-fastest in the conference this season.
In the final event of the meet, she swam the third leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team recorded a time of 1:33.08 for the win. The mark currently ranks first in the Conference and 15th in the nation. It also goes into the SDSU record book as the eighth-fastest time in program history.
San Diego State, which has run its meet record to 7-0 this season, returns to action this weekend when it visits Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, Nov.1, for a double dual meet against Colorado State and Idaho scheduled to get underway at 11:00 a.m. (MT).
