SAN DIEGO - Carina Carballo broke a 7-7 tie with 24 seconds left in regulation to lift the San Diego State water polo team to an 8-7 victory over the alumni Saturday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex. The win avenges last year's sudden-death overtime loss to the former players.
SDSU faced a 3-1 deficit in the second quarter before scoring three unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead as the game went into the halftime break. In the third quarter, the Aztecs scored another three unanswered goals that were bookended by single goals from the alumni.
With San Diego State nursing a 7-5 lead, the alumni scored twice to knot the score with 4:52 to play. Neither team found the back of the net over the next few minutes, but with time winding down, Carballo was able to tickle the twine to give SDSU a two-goal lead. In the final moments, the alumni was awarded a penalty shot, one in which Emily Tylka stonewalled to preserve the Aztecs' victory.
In addition to Carballo's game-winner, Anique Hermann and Caroline Israels scored twice for SDSU, while Nikki de Roos and Claire McKinnon added single goals. In net for the Aztecs was Rachel Mitchell and Emily Tylka, who recorded three saves apiece.
San Diego State officially opens the season on Feb. 5, when it plays host to Hartwick. First sprint is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT at Aztec Aquaplex.
