FRESNO, Calif. - No. 12 San Diego State came up short against top-ranked Stanford, 18-6, in its first game of the Fresno Pacific Mini Tournament. With the loss, the Aztecs fall to 4-3 overall, while the Cardinal improve to 7-0.
Stanford was the first team to dent the scoreboard when the game was barely two minutes old, but Caroline Israels leveled the score on the very next possession. The Cardinal ended up posting the contest's next four goals before Anique Hermann made it a 5-2 game with 30 seconds left in the period.
The following eight minutes decided the game as Stanford found the back of the net four times while holding the Aztecs scoreless. At halftime, SDSU faced a 9-2 deficit.
In the third quarter, the Aztecs nearly matched each Cardinal goal, but was ultimately outscored, 5-4, in the period. Alex Hoetker scored on a power-play opportunity with 6:49 left in the period, but by then, Stanford was up, 10-3. San Diego State ended up receiving goals from Mikayla Vessey, Makena Magro and Israels to end the frame as it trailed 14-6 heading into the fourth period.
Stanford concluded the game with an effort identical to the second quarter, scoring four times and keeping SDSU off the scoreboard to provide the final 12-goal margin.
The Aztecs are in action at 3:30 p.m. PT vs. No. 17 UC Santa Barbara to wrap up the FPU Mini Tournament.
