NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - No. 10 San Diego State defeated 18th-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 7-4, on Saturday at the UCI Invitational, which was being contested at Corona del Mar High School. The Aztecs' third win over the Gauchos this season moves their record to 6-4.
SDSU enjoyed a 3-1 lead after one period and later increased it to 5-1 by the time halftime rolled around. The teams played even in the third quarter with each team finding the back of the net one time apiece. The Aztecs entered the fourth period up comfortably, 6-2, before settling for the three-goal victory.
San Diego State, which scored six straight goals at one point, was led by Caroline Israels and Nikole Ferrari's two goals. Alyssa Diacono, Ioli Benekou and Taylor Gums each scored a single goal. Goalkeeper Rachel Mitchell made a game-high 10 saves.
The Aztecs will return to action on Sunday at 8 a.m. PT when they face Golden Coast Conference foe T-No. 20 Loyola Marymount. The game will be played at Corona del Mar High School.
