SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State water polo standout Carina Carballo earned a spot on the Team Mexico squad currently playing at the Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada. Group action runs from July 7-11, and Mexico is joined in Group A by the United States, Cuba and Argentina.
Carballo, a four-year Aztec letterwinner and two-time Golden Coast Conference champion, started in Mexico's opener vs. the U.S. on Tuesday, but her squad was downed, 25-3. Next up for Carballo and Mexico is Argentina on Wednesday, July 8, at 8:08 a.m. ET. The final game of group play is set for Saturday, July 11, when Mexico faces Cuba at 10:08 a.m. ET.
On Sunday, July 12, classification games will take place and will be followed by two semifinals matches. Then on Tuesday, July 14, additional classification games will be contested with the bronze-medal and championship games slated to round out the competition.
Carballo just completed her eligibility at San Diego State this past season and posted 13 goals, 11 assists and 46 steals (fourth on team), while playing in all 32 games for the back-to-back GCC regular-season champions. In her four years on Montezuma Mesa, which covered 129 games, she amassed 50 goals, 44 assists and 127 steals. Carballo was also a four-time national all-academic team performer.
