WOLCOTT, Colo. - Powered by Emma Henrikson's (Malmö, Sweden) superlative medal-winning performance, the San Diego State women's golf program steamrolled to its first team title of the season on Wednesday after posting a combined 10-under-par 278 during the final round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge at Red Sky Golf Club.
With their triumph, the Aztecs established a school record for lowest 54-hole score, finishing at 6-under 858 to top second-place TCU (+14) by 20 strokes on the par-72, 6,261-yard Tom Fazio Course.
All five SDSU starters finished among the top 20, led by Henrikson, who completed the tournament at 10-under 206 to tie an Aztec individual standard set by Christine Wong at the 2009 Price's Give 'Em High Five Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M.
Henrikson registered her second collegiate victory, matching a career-best with her second straight 67 to easily outdistance Monica Vaughn of Arizona State and TCU's Kelly McGovern, who tied for the runner-spot at 1-under 215. The Aztec senior paced the field of 86 golfers with 20 birdies on the week, including seven conversions Wednesday. When Henrikson rolled in her final putt for birdie on the par-5, 513-yard 18th, she became the first player in the event's seven-year history to finish with a double-digit score below par.
In addition, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) remained in the fourth position at 3-over 219 after carding a final-round 72. The SDSU junior regrouped from a 76 on Tuesday, offsetting two bogeys with a pair of birdies before closing with five straight pars to secure her sixth career top-five placement.
Elsewhere, the Aztecs' biggest advance up the leaderboard was engineered by Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who leaped 15 places into a tie for eighth at 4-over 220 after shooting a 69. The SDSU sophomore set the tone for the day with three straight birdies, including a successful make on the par-4, 396-yard No. 4, which ranked as the third-toughest hole on Wednesday. After hitting a snag with bogeys on the 6th and 7th greens, Krause added three more birdies through the turn en route to her highest finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform.
The Aztecs also received a boost from fellow classmate Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who made a fortuitous jump of her own, vaulting 14 places into a tie for 14th with a collective 6-over 222. Chaves saved her best for last by firing a season-low 70, highlighted by six birdies, including her finishing hole, the par-5, 491-yard No. 2.
Sophomore Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) experienced a reversal of fortune, however, slipping 14 spots into a tie for 17th at 7-over 223 after logging a 78 on Wednesday. The Torrey Pines High alumna, who entered the final round in third place, was even through five holes until two straight bogeys and a double-bogey at No. 8 dropped her out of contention. Despite the stumble, Lacey still managed her second-best finish as a collegian.
San Diego State will have two weeks off before returning to competition at the University of Washington's Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, scheduled for Oct. 6-7, at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Wash.
