The San Diego State water polo team made the short drive to La Jolla Shores Beach last Friday, Oct. 16, to join the Challenged Athletes Foundation in its open water swim clinic. In addition to helping with swimming lessons, the Aztecs also helped with surfing instruction.

"It was the best possible community service opportunity we could have asked for," head coach Carin Crawford said. "The team and I are grateful that we are healthy, active and able-bodied athletes. It is equally rewarding to work with athletes who expressed such pure joy in being in the ocean, swimming, surfing, playing in the sand and doing things that we can easily take for granted. It was truly rewarding to be of service to others less fortunate than ourselves, yet they continually reminded us that no matter what your circumstance or situation is, you can find joy in life's simple pleasures."

In addition to assisting with the lessons, the water polo squad helped with wetsuit fitting and getting children from the walkway to the sand in preparation for their time in the ocean.

The Aztecs' time with the Challenged Athletes Foundation came just days after they joined women's tennis, track and field, and cross country in a beach clean-up at Ocean Beach.
