SAMMAMISH, Wash. - The San Diego State women's golf team finds itself in second place after posting a collective 15-over-par 591 on Tuesday during the first two rounds of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club. The 23rd-ranked Aztecs carded scores of 294 and 297 to remain 10 shots in back of front-runner California heading into Wednesday's final round on the par-72, 6,039-yard layout.
Three SDSU players finished the day among the top 15, led by reigning Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Month Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who landed in a four-way tie for fifth after firing a 2-over 146 on back-to-back 73s. Despite recording a double-bogey on the par-3 fifth and notching a bogey-5 at No. 8 on her back nine of the afternoon session, the Aztec senior still managed to climb three places on the individual leaderboard from the opening round.
With her effort, Henrikson sits just four strokes behind Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan (-2), while Lucia Gutierrez of California (-1) occupies the second spot, followed by Golden Bear teammate Hannah Suh (+1) and Vanessa Ha of San Francisco.
In addition, Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) remains one shot in back of Henrikson in a tie for ninth at 3-over 147 on rounds of 73-74. After notching consecutive bogeys on her front nine at No. 15 and No. 16 in round one, the SDSU sophomore closed with a rush, recording 10 pars to go with a birdie on the par-4 third. Chaves drained an additional three birdies in the afternoon, but five bogeys, including two on her finishing holes, stalled her momentum.
Meanwhile, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) finds herself six shots off the pace in a six-way logjam for 13th after posting a 4-over 148. Despite recording two birdies against six bogeys on the day, the Aztec junior managed to minimize the damage with a tournament-high 28 pars, including six straight on the back nine of round two.
Elsewhere, sophomore Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) completed the first 36 holes in a tie for 34th at 8-over 152. The Torrey Pines High alumna was tied for eighth after round one thanks to a 73, highlighted by 10 pars and two birdies on her final 12 holes. However, Lacey's score ballooned to a 79 in the afternoon as two double-bogeys proved too much to overcome.
Rounding out the Aztec contingent was fellow classmate Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who tied for 51st with a combined 13-over 157. After stumbling to an 80 in the morning, Krause shaved three strokes off her score in round two, logging six pars and a birdie on her final seven holes.
With Cal and SDSU occupying the top two spots in the team standings, host Washington (+18) remains in third place three shots behind the Aztecs, while Pepperdine (+21) and Gonzaga (+21) are tied for the fourth position.
The Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational concludes on Wednesday, with the Aztecs teeing off alongside the Huskies and Golden Bears beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
