SAMMAMISH, Wash. - The San Diego State women's golf team endured a steady rain on Wednesday, capturing its second straight tournament title after carding a 13-over par 301 during the final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at the par-72, 6,039-yard Sahalee Country Club.
The 23rd-ranked Aztecs, who entered the day in second place 10 shots in back of California, surged into the lead on the back nine, finishing the 54-hole event at 28-over 892, five strokes in front of the runner-up Golden Bears.
"I am so proud of this team with the way they fought and persevered through adverse conditions," said SDSU head coach Leslie Spalding. "For our players to come up here and shoot like they did in the rain just demonstrates their character. It's not easy for us to compete in this type of weather, so it was very special to watch them pull through like they did."
With the average individual score ballooning nearly three strokes to 79.20 due to soggy conditions on Wednesday, the Aztecs still had four players log top-20 performances for the week, led by Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who tied for fifth at 5-over 221 after recording a final-round 74. Despite a double-bogey on the par-5, 440-yard No. 2, the SDSU sophomore played steady golf the rest of the day, offsetting two bogeys with a pair of birdies to secure her highest finish of the season and third top-five effort as a collegian.
The Aztecs also received a tremendous boost from fellow classmate Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), who was one of just two golfers to shoot par or better during the final round after firing a team-best 72. The Torrey Pines High alumna led the squad with four birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 375-yard No. 12, which ranked as the second-toughest hole on Wednesday. With her result, Lacey registered her best finish in a Scarlet and Black uniform, vaulting 25 places up the individual leaderboard into a tie for ninth at 8-over 224.
On the other hand, Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) experienced a reversal of fortune, tumbling seven places into an eight-way logjam for 12th at 9-over 225 after posting a 79. The SDSU senior finished with two birdies on her final four holes, including a successful make on the par-4, 351-yard 15th, which ranked as the fourth-most difficult green in the final round. However, Henrikson was plagued by seven bogeys, including four on the front nine, while a double-bogey-6 at No. 14 hastened her drop. Despite a non-counting score, the native Swede still completed the 17th top-15 placement of her Aztec career.
Meanwhile, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) landed in the 20th position on Wednesday at 10-over 226 on the heels of a 78. The SDSU junior began her round inauspiciously with a double-bogey on the par-4 first, before righting the ship with six pars and two birdies over the ensuing nine holes. Blair added five pars after the turn, but two bogeys and a costly triple on the par-5 18th, knocked her out of the top 10. Despite the hiccup, she still completed the week with her ninth collegiate top 20.
Not to be outdone, Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) figured in the Aztecs' winning total after posting her second consecutive 77, featuring a team-high-tying 13 pars and a birdie on the par-4 No. 3. With her round, the SDSU sophomore climbed 10 spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for the 41st position at 18-over 234.
In the team standings, host Washington (+35) was unable to gain ground on one of its home courses, remaining in the third spot behind the Aztecs and Cal, while San Francisco (+40) and Pepperdine (+42) rounded out the top five.
Gonzaga's Bianca Pagdanganan (+1) held on to her second-round lead, edging USF's Vanessa Ha (+2) and Emelie Lundstrom (+3) for medalist honors, while Hannah Suh of California took fourth (+4) followed by SDSU's Chaves (+5), who tied for the fifth spot with UW's Wenyung Keh.
San Diego State will have the next three weeks off before wrapping up its fall schedule at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 25-27, at Boulder Creek Golf Course in Boulder City, Nev.
