Marcus Stamps scored on a 4-yard run with 13 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Black squad (offense) to a 14-7 victory over the Red team (defense) Saturday in the annual San Diego State Red and Black Spring Game on the SDSU campus.
Despite allowing 100 yards on the ground to both Rashaad Penny (106) and Stamps (103), the Aztec defense stole the spotlight on the afternoon, posting 10 tackles for loss, five sacks and two interceptions. In addition, five different quarterbacks were limited to a combined 9-for-29 passing performance for 166 yards.
After the first five possessions ended in punts, Jake Rodrigues directed an 8-play, 88-yard march early in the second quarter that consumed 5:43 of the running clock. Penny's 60-yard scamper down the left sideline on 3rd-and-3 put the offense in striking position from the 10. Moments later, the drive appeared to stall when Rodrigues' fourth-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone. However, Kevin Walcott was flagged for pass interference, and Stamps made the defense pay with a 2-yard plunge for the first touchdown of the day.
The Red team got on the board with 9:33 elapsed in the third quarter when Kendrick Mathis intercepted an Adam Wood pass and cut back 27 yards to the end zone, knotting the score at 7-7.
On the first play of the ensuing possession, Rodrigues threw deep to wide receiver Paul Pitts, who beat Damontae Kazee for a 55-yard gain that put the Black squad in prime position once again at the 10-yard line. Following an incompletion and two short running plays, however, Daryl Dunlap extinguished the threat with an interception a yard deep in the end zone off a tipped ball by Fred Melifonwu and raced out to 28-yard line before getting pushed out of bounds.
In a familiar refrain, the next three drives resulted in punts as well before quarterback Nick Bawden led the Black squad on one last trek down the field. Facing a 3rd-and-1 situation from the 25, Stamps burst through a gaping hole on the right side and darted 67 yards down to the 8-yard line. Two plays later, Stamps' number was called once again as the SDSU running back churned his way up the middle from 4 yards out to provide the winning margin.
In addition to his rushing total, Stamps also caught two passes for 20 yards, matching Mikah Holder, who also recorded two receptions for 50 yards, including an impressive one-handed grab from Christian Chapman in the third quarter on a 3-and-12 play that resulted in a 24-yard gain.
On the other side of the ball, Dunlap and Ryan Dunn paced the defensive effort with five tackles apiece, while Calvin Munson, Jay Henderson, Malik Smith, Micah Seau, and Malcolm Jackson each came up with a sack.
San Diego State opens fall camp in August.
