SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ââ'¬" San Diego State women's golfer Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) continued her stellar season on Tuesday, posting a third-place performance at the seventh annual Bruin Wave Invitational after carding an even-par 72 during the final round at San Luis Obispo Country Club.
With her score, the Aztec senior completed the 54-hole event with a collective 1-under 215 to finish just two strokes in back of UCLA teammates Louise Ridderstrom and Bronte Law, who completed regulation play at 3-under 213. Shortly thereafter, Ridderstrom emerged victorious on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to claim medalist honors.
As a team, SDSU slipped one notch into a tie for fourth place with Oklahoma State at 25-over 889 after posting a combined 300 over the final 18 holes on the par-72, 6,250-yard track.
Bolstered by three top-five individual efforts, UCLA (+4) maintained its lofty perch to capture the team title by 14 strokes over runner-up Arizona State (+18), while another Pac-12 squad California (+24) sneaked past the Aztecs and Cowgirls for third.
On a day when only six golfers in the 82-player field finished with rounds below par, Henrikson was unable to attach her name to that list, but still managed to climb two places on the leaderboard. The native Swede was on the brink of disaster, slipping to 4-over for the day after making a triple-bogey on the par-4, 344-yard No. 6. However, the three-time all-Mountain West performer stormed back with a vengeance down the stretch, carding 10 pars and four birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 366-yard No. 12, which ranked as the second-toughest hole of the final round. With her effort, Henrikson completed her fourth top-five finish in six starts this year.
SDSU also received a top-10 placement from sophomore Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), who climbed one spot into eighth at 2-over 218 after logging her second straight 73 on Tuesday. The Torrey Pines High alumna registered three of her four birdies on the front nine, including back-to-back makes on the second and third greens. However, five bogeys, including four after the turn, prevented a steeper ascent on the leaderboard. Nevertheless, Lacey still managed her highest finish in an Aztec uniform.
Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) was also plagued by difficulty on the back nine during the final round. The SDSU junior got back to even after draining a birdie on the par-5 No. 7, but six bogeys down the stretch resulted in an inflated score of 78. With her stumble, Blair fell one spot into a tie for 24th at 12-over 228.
Elsewhere, Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay) experienced a reversal of fortune as well on Tuesday, dropping six places into a tie for 31st at 15-over 231 after struggling to an uncharacteristic 80. The Aztec sophomore was unable to find a rhythm, suffering five bogeys and two double-bogeys while sinking just one birdie on the par-5 7th.
Meanwhile, Hana Furuichi (San Diego, Calif.) contributed to SDSU's final-round total after posting a 77. The Aztec freshman was cruising on the front nine with eight pars and a birdie on the par-3 8th, but hit a wall after the turn, recording five bogeys and one double-bogey against two pars and a birdie. Despite the trouble, Furuichi still managed to climb 11 places into a tie for 46th at 19-over 235.
The Scarlet and Black will have nearly three weeks off from competition before returning to the course for their lone home tournament of the season, the SDSU March Mayhem match-play event, scheduled for March 21-23 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
