LA JOLLA, Calif. - Two of four San Diego State men's tennis duos competing at the prestigious Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship advanced to the Round of 32 on Saturday at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The tournament is in its 127th year and is considered the second oldest tennis event in the United States.
The Aztecs' coaching staff teamed up to put on an impressive display at the Pacific Coast Doubles. Head coach Gene Carswell and assistant coach Jeff Thomsen beat Stephen Conching and William LeFevre, 8-5, in the Round of 128. The duo then topped Matthew Browne and Ben Horst in the Round of 64, 8-6. In the round of 32, Carswell and Thomsen fell to Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell, 8-1.
SDSU's most impressive doubles pairing of late in dual matches, Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev opened the tournament by pushing aside Charlie Croxford and Richard Solberg with an 8-6 win, which they followed with an 8-4 Round of 64 victory against Glenn Hull and Lestter Yeh. But the pair dropped their Round of 32 match to Max Cressy and Martin Redlicki, 8-5.
Jonas Meinzer and Cornelius Kolb also departed the Round of 128 victory when the pair knocked away Eddie Acuna and Patrick Guion, 8-4. However, the duo lost to Adam Gustafsson and David Warren in the Round of 64, 8-3.
After opening the tournament with an 8-6 loss to Lukas Finzelberg and Jurence Mendoza, Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Hendrik Jebens were placed in the consolation bracket. The duo opened consolation play defeating Saxon Buehning and Marc Isaia, 9-8, and received a second round bye, but lost to David Goulak and Ivan Thamma, 8-4.
Following the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, San Diego State returns to the confines of Aztec Tennis Center on March 11 and 12 to host Penn at 2 p.m. and Arizona at noon, respectively.
