NAPA, Calif. ââ'¬" The San Diego State women's golf team finished in 12th place at the Silverado Showdown on Tuesday after posting a collective 316 during the final round at the famed Silverado Resort and Spa. With their total, the 17th-ranked Aztecs slipped five places in their final tune-up before the Mountain West Championships, completing the 54-hole tournament at 45-over 909 on the par-72, 6,206 North Course.
After all five SDSU players advanced up the individual leaderboard on Monday, the same crew experienced a reversal of fortune during the final 18 holes, including Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who tumbled nine spots into a tie for 13th at 4-over 220 on the heels of a 78. The Aztec senior entered the day in fourth place, but got off to a wobbly start with five bogeys and a double on her first seven holes and was unable to recover despite making three birdies on the 15th, 17th and 18th greens.
Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) matched Henrikson with a 78 on Tuesday, but could not avoid a plunge of 16 places into a tie for 45th at 11-over 227. The SDSU sophomore recorded pars on the three toughest holes of the final round (Nos. 3, 13 and 10) to go with a birdie at the par-4 fourth. However, seven bogeys expedited her fall.
Elsewhere, fellow classmate Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) finished the tournament in a tie for 57th with a combined 14-over 230 after logging an 80. The Torrey Pines High alumna appeared to have righted the ship with a birdie-3 at No. 9 along with five subsequent pars after opening with a double on the eighth green. However, five bogeys followed by another double on the second nine derailed her momentum.
In addition, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who was saddled with an atypical 81 on Tuesday, witnessed a similar scenario unfold, carding a birdie at No. 14 and five consecutive pars of her own after completing her first six holes at 5-over. The Aztec junior was unable to maintain the same consistency down the stretch as two doubles and a bogey over a three-hole span on Nos. 2-4 hastened her drop into the 68th position at 17-over 233.
Rounding out the SDSU delegation was sophomore Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay), who tied for 78th with a 20-over 236 after shooting a final-round 80. Chaves made birdie on the par-4, 390-yard 13th, which ranked as the second-toughest hole of the final round, and added nine pars, but seven bogeys and a double proved too much to overcome.
Stanford (+1), which led wire-to-wire, captured the team title by a comfortable 13 shots over runner-up Oregon (+14), followed closely by Pepperdine (+16), while Colorado (+19) and Ohio State (+21) grabbed the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Cathleen Santoso of Oregon (-5) shot a 71 on Tuesday to claim medalist honors over Stanford's second-round leader Lauren Kim (-4), who fired a 73, while Esther Lee (-3) of Colorado finished close behind in third on the strength of a final-round 68.
San Diego State will have nearly two weeks to prepare for the Mountain West Championships, slated for April 18-20, at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
