STANFORD, Calif. -- San Diego State's Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) fired a 4-under-par 67 on Friday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during the opening round of the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice at a rain-soaked Stanford Golf Course.
The SDSU junior sank six birdies overall, including four on the front nine, to finish with her lowest 18-hole total in a Scarlet and Black uniform. With her total, Lacey vaulted to the top of the individual leaderboard, forging a two-shot advantage over both Hannah Kim of Northwestern and UCLA's Bethany Wu (-2) heading into Saturday's second round on the par-71, 6,130-yard track.
Collectively, the Aztecs ended the day in 14th place after carding a 19-over 303. Despite the inflated number, SDSU remains just 11 strokes out of the top five with two rounds remaining. Front-runner Northwestern emerged with the early lead in the standings after posting a 1-over 285, while UCLA sits in second at 3-over 287, followed by third-place Arizona State (+7).
The rest of the SDSU delegation was not able to adapt to the soggy conditions, including Natalie Vivaldi (Oceanside, Calif.) and Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who each shot a 78 to finish the day in a tie for 62nd.
Vivaldi followed a birdie at the par-5, 473-yard No. 12 with a double-bogey on the 13th before rebounding with five straight pars. Despite an another birdie on the par-4, No. 7, however, the Aztec senior was unable to maintain the same consistency down the stretch, as four bogeys and an additional double thwarted her progress.
On the other hand, Krause was looking to ease the sting of two straight bogeys on the front nine, and the SDSU junior did just that, draining her lone birdie of the day on the par-5, 495-yard No. 1, followed by three consecutive pars. However, Krause experienced a reversal of fortune, closing with four bogeys on her final five holes.
Elsewhere, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) finds herself in a tie for 77th after notching an atypical 80 in the first round despite notching a team-high 12 pars. Given the weather and a dearth of birdies on her scorecard, the Aztec senior was just 3-over for the day after 13 holes, but a double-bogey at the par-4, 390-yard No. 5, followed immediately by a untimely triple, hastened her drop in the standings.
Meanwhile, SDSU's fifth starter Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay.) ended the day one stroke behind Blair in a tie for the 80th after recording an uncharacteristic 81. The Aztec junior opened with six pars to go along with a birdie on the par-4, 386-yard No. 13, which ranked as the second-toughest green on Friday, but three double-bogeys on her first four holes after the turn short-circuited her momentum.
The Stanford Intercollegiate continues with second-round action on Saturday when SDSU tees off alongside Washington and Colorado, starting at 9:15 a.m. PT on hole 10.
