SAN DIEGO - The No. 65 San Diego State men's tennis team was unable to overcome the strong play of No. 24 San Diego and fell to the Aztecs' crosstown rival, 4-0, on Saturday afternoon at USD's Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center.
The first match of the day was earned in decisive fashion by San Diego on court No. 1, with Uros Petronijevic and Filip Vittek knocking off Freddy Gelbrich and Marko Goles-Babic, 6-1.
Hendrik Jebens and Sander Gjoels-Andersen put up a fight in the No. 3 spot, but ultimately fell to Romain Kalayjian and Alexandros Araouzos, 6-4, allowing the Toreros to enter singles play with the doubles point.
Singles play saw a battle between nationally ranked opponents on court No. 1 between the Toreros' No. 33 Petronijevic and the Aztecs' No. 89 Freddy Gelbrich. The advantage ultimately went to Petronijevic, 6-2, 6-0.
Vittek topped Goles-Babic 6-2, 6-2, in the No. 3 position, while Meinzer lost to Araouzos, 6-2, 6-3, for the final 4-0 Torero win. Upon the match's conclusion, Milen Ianakiev had a 6-4, 4-3 advantage over Romain Kalaydjian on court No. 4, and Cornelius Kolb was leading Joshua Page 7-6 (7), 4-1.
Up next, San Diego State returns to the confines of Aztec Tennis Center on Thurs., March 3 with a 2 p.m. match against Pepperdine. The Aztecs will then compete in the 127th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, which runs from Thurs., March 3 to Sun., March 6.
