NEW ORLEANS - Six San Diego State athletes have been named All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), USTFCCCA announced today. Honors are awarded for performances at the final site of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which were held last weekend in Eugene, Ore.
Ashley Henderson earned first-team honors in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100-meter relay, and second-team accolades in the 200. Micha Auzenne, Simone Glenn and Starlynn Singleton joined Henderson on the first-team 4x100 with Auzenne also garnering an honorable-mention nod in the 100 hurdles. Discus throwers Rachel Alesi and Alexa Evans also were named to the second team.
The performances of the six helped the Aztecs finish in a tie for 20th at the meet, their fourth top-25 finish over the last five years.
Henderson narrowly missed a national title in the 100, running a wind-aided time of 10.96 seconds, just 0.01 behind the winner Ariana Washington of Oregon at 10.95. She also anchored the sixth-place 4x100 team to a time of 43.68 in the final. The quartet of Singleton, Glenn, Auzenne and Henderson set a school record in the event with a time of 43.55 in the prelims on Thursday. Henderson also ran a time of 23.30 in the 200 in Thursday's prelims to take 11th.
Evans and Alesi took ninth and 12th, respectively, in the discus. Evans made the nine-person final with a best mark of 178 feet, 4 inches (54.36m), while Alesi's top throw was 175-11 (53.62m).
Auzenne also came in 19th in the 100 hurdles prelims with a time of 13.27, equaling her best wind-legal time, which was the sixth fastest in school history.
Henderson has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials, which will take place from June 30-July 10 in Eugene, in both the 100 and the 200.
