STILLWATER, Okla. -- San Diego State men's golfer PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) was one of 25 student-athletes named to the PING All-West Region team, as announced recently by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
With his honor, the recent Aztec graduate received all-region distinction for the second straight season, making him eligible for GCAA All-America consideration next month. In addition, Samiere's selection gives the Scarlet and Black at least one all-region performer for the eighth year in a row and 16th overall since the award was launched in 2008.
In all, a total of 15 schools were represented in the West, while 154 players were selected across six regions -- Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West.
Samiere, who garnered his second all-Mountain West accolade last month, led San Diego State with a career-best 71.45 scoring average for a single season, which ranked fourth in the conference during the 2017-18 campaign. The Kailua, Hawaii, product also paced the squad with 21 rounds at or below par, including 13 in the 60s. In addition, he recorded five top-10 finishes, giving him 11 for his career.
Last month, Samiere propelled the Scarlet and Black to a third-place tie at the historic Western Intercollegiate with sixth-place effort of 6-under-par 204, earning MW Golfer of the Week recognition. He also tied a tournament record with a career-best 7-under 63 during the second round, which equaled the third-lowest 18-hole score in program history.
During the fall schedule, Samiere registered a trio of top-10 placements, including a solo fourth-place performance at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, where he shot a 2-under 214, including a final-round 69. He also fired a career-low 12-under 201 to finish alone in fifth at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, completing all three rounds below 70, before tying for sixth at the Saint Mary's Invitational with a 6-under 207.
Under the guidance of 15th-year head coach Ryan Donovan, San Diego State ended the 2017-18 season by appearing in its school-record 20th consecutive regional tournament, posting a 10th-place finish at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla.
