SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis played round one of ITA Southwest Regionals at the Barnes Tennis Center on Thursday, where the team was successful in its three doubles matches but was not as fortunate in singles play.
Senior Jenny Moinard and freshman Ellie Ashley paired up for the first time to knock out Long Beach State's Carlota Casasamepre and Zara Lennon 8-4 in the round of 64. The duo will move on to the doubles round of 32 on Friday where they are set to face Elysia Bolton and Jada Hart of UCLA at 9 a.m.
Junior Mia Smith and sophomore Abbie Mulbarger took down Grand Canyon's Celina Buhr and Emilia Occhipinti, 8-4, in their round of 64 matchup. The pair is matched up against UCLA's Abi Altick and Alaina Miller Friday at 9 a.m. in the round of 32.
The final doubles win came from junior Magda Aubets and sophomore Nnena Nadozie's 8-3 victory over Skyla Alcon and Ana Fraile Toboso (CSUN) in the round of 64. The Aztecs move on to tomorrow's round of 32 where they will face off against Csenge Furak at 9 a.m.
Freshmen Shakhnoza Khatamova and Aesha Patel received a first-round bye and will play Nikola Dolakova and Maayan Sela (Hawai'i) in the round of 32 on Friday at 9 a.m.
In singles play, Aubets was the sole Aztec to claim and individual victory with a 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 win over Dolakova (Hawai'i) in the round of 128, but fell in the round of 64, 7-6, 6-3, to Arizona's Csenge Furak. Mulbarger also won in the round of 128 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sadaf Sadeghvaziri (LBSU), but eventually fell 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 64 to Arizona's Talya Zandberg.
Smith took opponent Yesica De Lucas (LMU) to three sets to win 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the round of 128, but dropped her round of 64 match to CSUN's Monika Van de Vondel, 6-2, 7-5. Moinard topped Grand Canyon's Buhr in the round of 128, 6-3, 6-0, but couldn't get past UCLA's Jada Hart, 6-3, 7-6, in the round of 64.
The rest of the Aztecs fell in their first round of singles matches, but all nine women will continue on to consolation play on Friday afternoon.
Friday's competition begins with doubles matches at 9 a.m. Results and updated brackets from the Southwest Regionals will also be available on GoAztecs.com following each day of play. Parking and admission at Barnes Tennis Center are free for spectators.
