SAN DIEGO – San Diego State men's golf head coach Ryan Donovan has announced the signing of Callum Bruce (Banff, Scotland) and Simone Armando Colozza (Rome, Italy) to National Letters of Intent. The two prized recruits will join the Aztecs in time for the 2019-20 campaign.
A sophomore who is currently competing at Midland College in Texas, Bruce received the 2018 Jack Nicklaus Player of the Year Award by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) as a freshman last season to go with first-team PING All-America honors. He was also presented with the Phil Mickelson Award as the top NJCAA Division I freshman after recording a 71.18 scoring average while capturing four individual tournament titles, four runner-up finishes and four other top-10 placements.
In addition, Bruce was an all-Western Junior College Conference selection during the 2017-18 campaign after helping the Midland squad secure its 15th league championship in program history and a third-place standing at the NJCAA Division I Championships. At that tournament, the native Scot tied for second individually, carding a four-day total of 9-under 279, highlighted by a final-round 68.
This season, Bruce has already claimed an event crown at the Odessa College Invitational, where he shot an 8-under 136 (69-67), and tied for third at the High Country Shootout, firing a 15-under 201 to lead the Chaparrals to the team title.
Earlier this summer, Bruce also found success in junior competition, finishing third at the Dutch International Junior Open, where he logged an 11-under 277, to go with a trio of top-10 placements at the Tennant Cup (T-6th), the East of Scotland Championship (T-6th) and the Scottish Amateur Championship (T-9th, medal rounds). He also played for Team Scotland at the 2017 European Boys' Team Championship, posting a 3-0 individual record in match play.
Colozza, meanwhile, has excelled on the international stage as well, amassing six top-20 finishes over the past two years, including a pair of top-five placements during the summer of 2018 at the English Boys' Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship (T-4th) and the Italian Amateur Stroke Play Championship (5th).
In addition, Colozza emerged victorious on his home soil at the Niki's Cup in July 2017, followed by a runner-up effort at the Gran Premio Citta Di Cervia later that month. He also tied for sixth at the International Junior Golf Tour's Faldo United States Grand Finale in November of 2017 at Bella Collina Golf Club in San Clemente, Calif.
Other notable performances of late include a tie for 17th in the U18 classification at the 2018 R&A Boys Amateur Championship in Northern Ireland and a tie for 19th at the St. Augustine Amateur in Florida earlier in the year.
Colozza has also logged extensive action on the South Florida PGA Junior Golf circuit, recording 11 top-20 finishes from 2013-16. Among his highest placements during that span was a third-place tie at the 2016 Power Crunch Junior Championship and a solo fourth at the 2014 Club Med Sandpiper event.
A member of the Italian national team, Colozza currently attends Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida.
San Diego State resumes its 2018-19 schedule in just under three months when it travels to the Coachella Valley for The Prestige at PGA West, Feb. 18-20, in La Quinta, Calif.
