SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State swimming and diving team awaits its final competition before the 2019 Mountain West Championships this weekend, as the SDSU swimmers will take on Loyola Marymount in a road dual meet on Saturday while the SDSU divers are in action at the Northern Arizona Diving Invitational. The Aztecs are looking to cap a perfect season in dual meets, owning a perfect 12-0 record heading into this weekend.
The Northern Arizona Diving Invitational begins on Friday, Feb. 1 in Flagstaff, Arizona and concludes on Saturday, Feb. 2. SDSU's dual meet against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles is scheduled for Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
Following this weekend's action, the team will come back together to prepare for the Mountain West Championships held from Feb. 20 - 23 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Aztecs are seeking their 10th consecutive top-three finish and their first Mountain West title since 2015.
Last time out for the divers, SDSU held its own against a very competitive field and had a standout performance from Ximena Lechuga Gonzalez, who was one of just seven divers in a 60-diver field to place in the top 10 in all three events. Lechuga Gonzalez and Delaney Gallagher led the Aztecs to elite status on the platform board, as both recorded top-10 preliminary round scores to leave SDSU as one of three scores with multiple top-10 finishers, being joined by only USC and UCLA.
Should the Aztec swimmers defeat Loyola Marymount, SDSU would collect its fourth perfect dual meet season in the last six years. Over the team's last 72 dual meets (since Jan. 13, 2013), the Aztecs are 70-2.
In SDSU's last dual meet, the Aztecs made the quick trip to San Diego and defeated the Toreros, 138-126 after posting top times in 13 of 14 events. Mia Ryan and Klara Thormalm led the Aztecs with a pair of first-place finishes each, with Thormalm winning the 50 free and 200 breast while Ryan won the 100 and 200 free. With the win, SDSU improved to 23-0 against its crosstown foe over the last 12 seasons.
