Aztec Storylines
TONY GWYNN LEGACY: The fourth annual Tony Gwynn Legacy, co-hosted by San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, begins Friday, Feb. 22. Two games per day will be played at both Fowler Park and Tony Gwynn Stadium from Friday until Sunday.
A LOOK AT THE AZTECS: SDSU, which has started 3-1 for the second consecutive season, looks to improve upon a 2-1 showing in last year's Tony Gwynn Legacy, beating both Arizona and Grand Canyon in addition to falling to eventual national runner-up Arkansas. Last year's 2-1 finish is SDSU's best showing in the Tony Gwynn Legacy over the tournament's first three years.
The Aztecs begin the tournament with Utah on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. The SDSU-Utah contest will air on the Mountain West Network.
HISTORY WITH OUR OPPONENTS: San Diego State welcomes Utah, Oklahoma, and Kansas State this weekend.
The Aztecs have a long history with the Utes and own a dominating lead in the all-time series at 102-34. It is the first time the two teams are meeting since 2011, when Utah left the Mountain West for the Pac-12. The Aztecs enter the matchup having won 14 of the previous 25 meetings.
Oklahoma owns a 7-1 advantage in the all-time series with SDSU, with the Sooners and Aztecs most recently meeting in 2011. SDSU's lone win against Oklahoma came on Feb. 16, 2001.
Kansas State has won three of the four KSU-SDSU matchups and last played in 2012. Kansas State has won each of the last three meetings after SDSU won the first matchup 10-7 on Feb. 6, 1999.
STRIKEOUTS GALORE: Through four games, the Aztecs have recorded 59 strikeouts -- good for 14.8 strikeouts per nine innings, the second-highest ratio in the country. The Aztecs have recorded 12 or more strikeouts in each of their first four games (including 17, the team's highest total since striking out 17 at Air Force on May 8, 2009), marking the first time since at least 2000 the Aztecs have recorded 12 or more strikeouts in four consecutive games.
Casey O'Sullivan currently sits first in the Mountain West and seventh in the nation with 11 strikeouts. O'Sullivan's 21.21 strikeouts per nine average is fifth best in the country.
BUT WE'RE ALSO GETTING IT DONE AT THE PLATE: The Aztecs have recorded six or more runs in each of their four games, marking the first time since 2008 SDSU has opened a season with four consecutive 6+ run games. It's also the first time overall that the Aztecs have scored six or more runs in four-straight games since April 29, 2017 - May 5, 2017.
FUN WITH TWO: The Aztecs have scored 22 of their 31 runs this year with two outs and as a team are hitting .395 (17-for-43) with two outs. Brian Leonhardt is 5-for-6 this season with two outs, while Angelo Armenta is a perfect 4-for-4 and Julian Escobedo is 4-for-9. Six of Escobedo's eight RBIs this season have come with two outs.
SEEING DOUBLE: The Aztecs are first in the Mountain West and 10th in the country with 12 doubles this season. The Aztecs finished last year with the 16th most doubles in the country.
JULIAN ESCOBEDO & BRIAN LEONHARDT - RED HOT: Junior outfielder Julian Escobedo and freshman infielder Brian Leonhardt, both Eastlake HS graduates, have led the Aztec lineup over the first four games of the season.
After a career day against UC Irvine on Tuesday, Leonhardt leads the Aztecs in batting average (.500) while leading the Mountain West with four doubles. Leonhardt's four doubles are also fifth most in the nation.
Escobedo has recorded an RBI in four consecutive games, marking a career-long streak for the junior. Escobedo's eight RBIs currently rank second in the Mountain West and 17th in the nation.
ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END: SDSU saw an 86-game winning streak when leading after eight innings come to an end on Saturday afternoon after surrendering a three-run lead in the ninth inning. The streak stood as one of the top five longest in the nation.
Casey Schmitt also saw his consecutive scoreless innings streak come to a close after finishing his freshman year with 25.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
CALIFORNIA LOVE: Since 2014, the Aztecs lead all Division I California programs in win total. Also, over that span, SDSU is 97-45 (.683) when playing in-state counterparts.
