LAS VEGAS – The Aztecs' freshmen duo of Mallory Adams and Sophia Ramos were named to the Mountain West all-freshman team, the conference office announced Sunday morning. Adams was also an honorable mention selection for the all-conference team.
Adams (Frisco, Texas) is averaging 12.7 points and 9.6 rebounds per game in Mountain West play, making her the only true freshman in the nation to post those averages in conference play. In the Aztecs' 18 MW games, she has scored in double-digits 12 times, had 10 or more rebounds on ten occasions and posted six double-doubles.
Adams' rebounding average of 8.9 per game is the most by an Aztec since the 1999-00 season (Mary Apiafi) and the most by a freshman in 25 years (Tina Hutchinson).
Ramos (San Antonio, Texas) is the only true freshman in the nation to average at least 13.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists. She has provided the Aztecs with a steady hand at the point and shown the ability to score in a variety of ways. Ramos scored 10 or more points in 15 of the Aztecs' 18 MW games and led the team in assists 16 times.
She is the first Aztec freshman since hall of famer Falisha Wright (1991-92) to lead the team in scoring and is first player of any class to lead the team in both scoring and assists since the 2006-07 season (Quenese Davis).
The 7th-seeded Aztecs kick off the Mountain West Tournament against No. 10 Air Force later this afternoon (4:30 p.m.) at UNLV's Thomas and Mack Center.
