SAN DIEGO – Following a successful weekend where the Aztecs went 2-0 against conference opponents, San Diego State women's tennis returns home for back-to-back days of competition this weekend when it takes on UNLV on Saturday, April 13, and CSUN on Sunday, April 14. First serve in both dual matches is set for noon at the Aztec Tennis Center.
UNLV (13-6, 3-0 MW) visits the Mesa for their final regular season contest as the Aztecs' last conference opponent of the season. The Rebels enter this weekend's match having won their last four contests. UNLV's Aiwen Zhu is currently ranked by the ITA, both in singles (81st) and doubles (62nd) alongside partner En-Pei Huang. Last season, the Rebels and Aztecs faced off in Las Vegas during the regular season, where UNLV came out on top, 4-3.
CSUN, who enters Sunday's dual at 13-4, 3-4 Big West, is currently enjoying a three match win streak. The Matadors most recently traveled to America's Finest City in September 2018 for SDSU's Fall Classic I, where the team advanced to, but fell in, a championship doubles draw, logged a third-place win in doubles and fell in a consolation doubles final. The team also advanced to a handful of day three consolation singles events.
The Aztecs returned home to the Mesa this week following a victorious weekend of road conference play, going 4-1 at San Jose State and 4-2 at Nevada. SDSU, like UNLV, is on a four match win streak and sits at 12-7 on season with a perfect 3-0 conference record. The Aztecs have also logged their first 3-0 start in conference play since the spring of 2013, when the nationally-ranked squad put together a perfect 8-0 MW record to win a regular-season conference title.
Sophomore Nnena Nadozie and freshman Alicia Melosch have moved up in the ITA national rankings as a pair, jumping seven spots from last week to No. 70. Nadozie also has a team-high 12 singles wins in dual play, and she and senior Magda Aubets are both riding three match win streaks in solo play. Sophomore Abbie Mulbarger, who is 11-4 in dual singles play, has won a current team-high five straight singles contests.
Results from Saturday and Sunday's matches against UNLV and CSUN, respectively, will be available at GoAztecs.com following the conclusion of play. Admission is free at all home women's tennis matches at the Aztec Tennis Center.
MATCH ADDED
Due to San Diego State's dual match against Colorado State being rained out, the Aztecs have added one more match to close out the regular season. SDSU is now scheduled to once again host UC San Diego next Thursday, April 18, in a 2 p.m. contest at the Aztec Tennis Center. San Diego State's senior class – Jenny Moinard and Magda Aubets – will also be honored that day.
