Meet Week Preview
Mountain West Challenge - Friday, April 5
Myron Partridge Stadium & Sheila Tarr Smith Field
The Aztecs head to Las Vegas for the second annual Mountain West Challenge on Friday. The meet will feature the Aztecs, UNLV and Nevada, three of the four of the Mountain West schools that only field a women's program.
A season-high 29 Aztecs will be competing with a handful of athletes making their outdoor debut.
The meet will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the hammer throw. The running events begin at 11:30 a.m. with the 5,000-meter run. The meet will wrap up with the 4x400m relay, an event the Aztecs won last week at UCLA's Jim Bush Legends Invitational, at 2:00 p.m.
Per NCAA rules, the meet will be scored (Individual Events 9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1, Relays 9-7-6-5). Only two individual entries per institution shall be scored. Only one relay for each institution will be scored. The double-dual scoring format will be used.
Last year Aztecs hosted and won the event and took first place in six of the 16 events they competed in and had 17 top-three finishes overall. They finished the day with 158 points, edging out UNLV (145), Nevada (144) and San Jose State (86).
Bonnie Draxler Named MW Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
Aztec pole vaulter Bonnie Draxler was named the Mountain West Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon. Draxler cleared 14-09.50 at the Jim Bush Legends Invitational at UCLA Saturday to set a new SDSU, Mountain West and meet record.
Draxler's vault topped her previous career best by 3.5 inches and is currently the second-best mark in the nation and tied for the sixth-best mark in the world for 2019. Draxler topped her nearest competition by 10.25".
Draxler also holds the SDSU and Mountain West record for indoor pole vault. She cleared 14-11.50 earlier this month at the NCAA Indoor Championships and to take second place.
This is Draxler's third time winning the Mountain West Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week award. She has also won the award four times in the indoor season.
