Aztecs Notes
• San Diego State concludes its four-game, season-opening home stand this week with a Thursday night game against San Francisco and then a Sunday matinee against California on the SDSU Sports Deck. The four-game home stand is the longest of the season for SDSU.
• The Aztecs are 3-1-1 all-time against San Francisco, including a 2-0-0 record at home. This will be the first meeting since the 2003 season and that match, contested at USF, resulted in a 1-0 overtime victory for SDSU. In the two games played in San Diego, the Aztecs have outscored the Dons 4-0.
• Against California, San Diego State trails in the all-time series 9-4, which includes a 1-3 loss in Berkeley last season. In games contested in San Diego, the teams are 3-3-0 and have each scored a total of 10 goals in the six games. The last meeting in "America's Finest City" came in the 2012 season and was won by SDSU, 2-1.
• Thursday's clash with San Francisco comes four days after SDSU earned a 1-0 decision over LIU. The Aztecs produced 14 shots, putting seven on frame, but had to wait until the 88:22 mark to cash in. Chloe Frisch (Jr., MF/F, Solana Beach, Calif.) found the late goal on a sniper shot from the top right corner of the 18, blasting it high inside the upper corner at the far post. Brooke Lisowski (GK, Sr., Los Gatos, Calif.) stopped the one shot that reached her line and earned her first win as an Aztec.
• On a goal against No. 22 Texas Tech and an assist on the Frisch game-winner against LIU, freshman Kiera Utush (Fr., MF, Rocklin, Calif.) leads the team with three points. Utush is just the second freshman in the last 10 years to score the team's season-opening goal. The other freshman to tally a goal in her first collegiate game in that time frame is Taylor Moorehead (So., F, Valencia,Calif.) who had the game-winner in a 1-0 victory over New Mexico State last season. Digging deeper, Utush's strike came in the 51st minute and Moorehead's was in the 85th minute.
• With four shots on goal to lead the team, Makia Kaleiohi (Jr., MF/F, San Diego, Calif.) has already equaled her single-season high, which she set last year. She has produced two shots on goal in each of the team's two games, which are single-game highs for her career.
• Brooke Lisowski (Sr., GK, Los Gatos, Calif.), a transfer from California, has played every minute in goal for SDSU and has a 1-1-0 record. In 180 minutes, she has surrendered six goals, all against No. 22 Texas Tech, (3.00 GAA) and has made four saves (.400 save percentage). Poonam Ranu (RFr., GK, Fremont, Calif.) and true freshman Clarissa Ramirez (Fr., GK, Riverside, Calif.) are the other keepers on the roster vying for minutes.
• Head Coach Mike Friesen is in his 13th campaign leading the Mountain West's most dominant women's soccer program. Friesen has guided his squads to nine Mountain West championships (five tournament and four regular season), and five NCAA Tournament appearances. In 12 seasons of conference play, Friesen has a 72-19-15 record. His 72 victories are double that of the next closest conference coach...Wyoming's Peter Cuadrado and Boise State's Jim Thomas have won 36 games each in Mountain West play.
• Friesen's 141 victories (141-83-32) since the start of the 2007 season, the year he took control of the program, are the most by any coach in the Mountain West. Colorado College's Geoff Bennett ranks second on the list with 128 victories through last weekend.
• San Diego State is picked to finish fourth in the MW coaches' preseason poll. This marks the first time in 10 seasons the Aztecs have been picked to finish lower than second place. The last time SDSU was lower than second place in the preseason poll was at the beginning of the 2009 season, a year in which the team went 15-4-5, was undefeated in the Mountain West (5-0-2) and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Having won four of the last seven regular season titles, SDSU finds itself in the No. 4 spot in the Mountain West preseason coaches' poll, which snaps a six-year run of being the favorite in the eyes of the conference's head coaches.
• The Aztecs have won eight of the last 13 MW trophies (regular season and tournament), all of which have come under the direction of head coach Mike Friesen. In total, the 13th-year head coach has guided San Diego State to nine conference crowns.
• San Diego State brings back its top seven point-earners from last year, including 2018 Mountain West Newcomer of the Year Laura Fuentes (So., MF, Newark, Calif.). The midfielder tallied three goals and an assist as a true freshman. Fuentes finished with seven points on the year, one behind another freshman, team leader Chloe Frisch (Jr., MF/F, Solana Beach, Calif.) who totaled eight (two goals & four assists).
• Joining Frisch and Fuentes as the top returning point-getters are Taylor Moorehead (So., F, Valencia, Calif.), Phoebe Leitch (Jr., D/MF, Forest Row, England) and Darcy Weiser (Sr., F, Huntington Beach, Calif.) who each tallied three goals and six points in 2018. Sarah Broacha (Jr., D, Pleasanton, Calif.) and Mia Root (Jr., F, Placerville, Calif.) totaled a goal and two assists each for four points.

The Dons went 11-7-2 in 2018 and have opend the 2019 season 1-1-0 after a 0-2 loss to No. 5 Southern California and a victory over Hawaii 3-2... They were 4-3-2 in West Coast Conference (WCC) play and finished in fifth place on the league table... USF has been picked to finish in sixth place in the preseason WCC coaches poll... The Dons return 77 percent of their goals scored from last year, including their top goal producers Samantha Jehnings (11), Miciah Madison (4), Ashley Humphrey (4), and Kalena Teufel (3). ... The defense is anchored by a pair of keepers Molly Eby (8-3-1 in 11 starts in 2018 with 4 clean sheets) and Olivia Camera (3-4-1 in nine starts in 2018 with one clean sheet)... In 1,076:56 Eby allowed 19 goals (1.59 GAA) and stopped 42 shots which reached her line (.689 save percentage)... Camera played in 785:00 surrendering 13 goals (1.49 GAA) and made 28 saves (.683 save percentage)... The Dons are coached by Jim Millinder, who is in his eighth season at the helm of the program and brings a Division I career-record of 203-114-48 into the 2019 season. In seven years "on the hilltop" Millinder is 59-61-54.
California
The Bears game against SDSU will be Cal's third of the season after playing at UC Santa Barbara on Friday night... They opened the season with a 5-0 victory over Weber State... The Bears were picked to finish sixth in the Pac-12's preseason coaches' poll after finishing 11th in the conference last season... California finished 2018 with an overall record of 5-12-2, which included a 2-5-1 mark on the road, and were outscored 22-to-13 away from home... The team brings back 21 letter winners from last year including 14 upper classmen... Abi Kim, who scored six goals (1A, 13 pts) for California last season, is back to lead the team in her senior season... In goal, Cal played each of the three keepers on its roster in its 5-0 win over Weber State with freshman Angelina Anderson getting a team-high 49:49 and none of the three having to make a save. ... The Bears are coached by Neil McGuire who is in his 13th season leading the program and brings a 142-81-28 record into the 2019 season.
