STANFORD, Calif. – The San Diego State women's golf team slipped into 13th place at the Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Dr. Condoleezza Rice after firing a combined 12-over par 296 on Sunday during the final round at Stanford Golf Course.
With their total, the Aztecs dropped two places in the standings, finishing with a 54-hole total of 35-over 887 on the par-71, 6,195-yard layout.
Arizona State (-10) shot a 5-under 279 over the final 18 holes to capture the team title by five strokes over runner-up Stanford (-5), while USC (-4) and Arizona (-4) tied for third, followed by Florida (+4) and second-round leader Oregon (+4).
SDSU was led by Fernanda Escauriza (Asunción, Paraguay), who tied for 23rd at 3-over 216 after shooting a final-round 72. Starting on the 10th tee, the Aztec senior sank birdies on the par-5, 473-yard No. 12 and the par-5, 501-yard No. 1 to go with a team-high 13 pars, including seven straight to finish the day. However, she was unable to make a move on the leaderboard, dropping one notch after making three bogeys.
On the other hand, sophomore April Ranches (San Diego, Calif.) experienced a more precipitous fall, tumbling 22 places into a tie for 55th at 10-over 223 after settling for a 77. The Serra High product found birdies elusive on Sunday, suffering six bogeys before closing with four straight pars.
Conversely, Gioia Carpinelli (Boppelsen, Switzerland) made SDSU's biggest gain of the final round, climbing 14 places into a tie for 62nd at 12-over 225 after matching Escauriza with a 72. The Aztec junior carded a team-high five birdies, including a successful conversion at the par-4, 390-yard No. 5, which put her at 2-under for the day. However, an untimely triple bogey on the par-4 sixth, along with three other bogeys, prevented a sharper ascent.
Bernice Olivarez Ilas (Ayala Alabang, Philippines) also finished in the 62nd spot on the heels of a 75. The SDSU freshman logged two birdies, including an impressive drain on the par-4, 361-yard No. 15, which ranked as the third-toughest hole of the day. However, a double bogey on her finishing hole at No. 10, along with three straight bogeys on No. 16-18, proved too much to overcome.
Rounding out the Aztec delegation was Ella Adams (Adelaide, Australia), who shot a 79 to finish the tournament in a tie for 83rd at 24-over 237. The SDSU junior sank a birdie at the par-5, 488-yard No. 7 to go with 10 pars, but five bogeys and a quadruple bogey at No. 15 plagued her round.
Angelina Ye of host Stanford took home medalist honors after firing a combined 10-under 207 for the week, with her final-round 66 knocking second-round leader Vivian Hou of Arizona (-7) from the top perch, while Linn Grant of Arizona State (-6) was a close third.
Barring any additional schedule changes, San Diego State will return to competition as a team next spring when it plays host to the eighth annual Lamkin Invitational, Feb. 10-11, 2020, at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Aztec head coach Leslie Spalding will compete in the 2019 Senior LPGA Championship this week, Oct. 14-16, in French Lick, Indiana. The Golf Channel will provide live coverage all three days from noon-3 p.m. PT.
