SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis team conquered day one of the SDSU Fall Classic Friday. The Aztecs collected four doubles victories while securing nine singles wins on the first day of competition.
Friday began with doubles play as all four of the Aztecs' doubles tandems earned victories to move onto their respective draws' semifinals. Sophomore Agustina Rimoldi Godoy and freshman Cécile Morin topped Montana's Walker/Dunlap 6-1 in the black draw while sophomore Alicia Melosch and junior Nnena Nadozie dominated Eastern Washington's Braeden/Nelson 6-2 in the red draw. The white draw saw senior Mia Smith and junior Abbie Mulbarger top Northern Colorado's Wolfe/Chhabra 6-3, as well as a winning showing from freshman Julia Jordan and junior Tamara Arnold, besting Drake University's Tatarnikova/Palumbo 6-3.
In singles action, six Aztecs earned victories to move them onto tomorrow's semifinal matches. Melosch bested Drake's Palumbo in three sets, earning a 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory, while Jordan topped Northern Colorado's Keta with a 6-3, 6-4 win. The black draw saw Mulbarger claim a 5-7, 6-1, 7-6 (3) victory over Eastern Washington's Waite, while Godoy Rimoldi suffered a three-set loss to Montana's Oosterbaan, falling 3-6, 6-2, 7-6(5).
Morin, Arnold, Nadozie, and Smith each played two sets Friday as members of the white 16-person draw, with Morin, Arnold, and Nadozie each sweeping their singles efforts throughout the day. Morin first defeated Drake's Petushkova 7-6 (4), 7-5, and followed in the round of eight by topping Stanford's Madurawe 4-5 (def.). Arnold continued the success she saw in the ITA Southwest Regionals, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over Eastern Washington's Nelson in the round of 16 while besting Montana's Ronney in the round of eight 6-2, 6-2. Nadozie followed suit with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over UC Irvine's Nguyen in the round of 16 and also collected a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Stanford's Mossmer. Mia Smith fell in the round of 16 to Denver's Verden Anderson, falling 6-3, 6-2.
Action continues tomorrow at the Aztec Tennis Center, with doubles play kicking off at 9 a.m. Admission to Fall Classic II is free and fans are encouraged to park in P7 on the corner of 55th Street and Montezuma Road. The Aztec Tennis Center is located just beyond Tony Gwynn Stadium, SDSU Softball Stadium and the Aztec Aquaplex on the northwest edge of campus.
