SAN DIEGO – San Diego State women's tennis earned its second win of Spring 2020 action in so many days when they topped UC San Diego 6-1 Sunday at Aztec Tennis Center. With the victory, the Aztecs opened spring play with two consecutive victories for the third straight season.
For the second consecutive day, all three Aztec duos came out on top in doubles play. Junior transfer Tamara Arnold and freshman Julia Jordan opened the day with a 6-0 victory over UC San Diego's Chloe Wight and Sophie Pearson. Senior Mia Smith and junior Abbie Mulbarger claimed the doubles point for the Aztecs, topping the Triton's Julianna Sabile and Anu Bhadada 6-2. Sophomore Alicia Melosch and junior Nnena Nadozie gave SDSU the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win against top seeded UCSD tandem Becky Chou and Rachel Wagner.
Jordan opened singles play with a decisive 6-2, 6-0 victory over sixth seed Bhadada. Fellow freshman Cècile Morin brought the Aztecs within one point of securing the dual with a 6-3, 6-1 win over fifth-seeded Wight. Nadozie locked the match for the Aztecs with a 6-1, 7-5 triumph over second seed Pearson.
Also earning wins were Arnold (vs. Chou 6-1, 2-6, 6-1) and Melosch (vs. Wagner 3-6, 6-1, 6-2). Smith dropped a close decision, falling 3-6, 5-7 to forth seeded Valeria Corral.
THE NOTE
With their domination of doubles action Saturday and Sunday, the Aztecs swept doubles play in its first two matches of the spring season for the first time since Jan. 24, 2015.
UP NEXT
The Aztecs close out their three-match homestand when they host the University of Alabama Friday, Jan. 31. Play is set to begin at 2 p.m.
