LOS ANGELES - San Diego State guard Malachi Flynn was among 25 players selected to the John R. Wooden Award 2019-20 Midseason Watch List; the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced today. Selected by the Wooden Award National Advisory Board, the list is made up of 25 student-athletes, who based on their performances in November and December, are the early frontrunners for college basketball's most prestigious honor.
The junior from Tacoma, Wash., has helped No. 7 San Diego State to a 15-0 record and the longest current win streak in the nation. The team's 15-0 start is the second best in program history, trailing only the 2010-11 team which went 20-0 to open the year and was led by Kawhi Leonard, who was selected to the watch list that year. Flynn leads the Aztecs (15-0, 4-0 Mountain West Conference) in scoring (15.9), assists (5.1) and steals (1.6), while shooting 43.6 percent from the field and 43.0 percent from three-point range. The 6-1 guard has a team-high 14 games in double figures and had led the team in scoring 10 times.
Flynn is one of three juniors on the top-25 list, one of three players from a non-power league and the only student-athlete from the Mountain West Conference. In addition, Flynn is one of five players making their debut on the Wooden Watch after not being named on the Preseason Top 50. Those five include Flynn, Luka Garza (Iowa), Filip Petrusev (Gonzaga), Zavier Simpson (Michigan) and Obi Toppin (Dayton).
The players on the list are considered strong candidates for the 2020 John R. Wooden Award Men's Player of the Year presented by Wendy's. Players not chosen to the preseason list are still eligible for the Wooden Award™ late season list, and the National Ballot. The National Ballot consists of 15 top players who have proven to their universities that they meet or exceed the qualifications of the Wooden Award. Nearly 1,000 voters will rank in order 10 of those 15 players when voting opens prior to the NCAA Tournament and will allow voters to take into consideration performance during early round games. The Wooden Award All American Team™ will be announced the week of the "Elite Eight" round of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of the 2020 John R. Wooden Award will be presented by Wendy's during the ESPN College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 10, 2020.
