Aztecs Travel to UC Riverside; Host Campbell/Cartier Classic This Weekend
The San Diego State softball team continues its busy start to the season when it travels to UC Riverside for a 2 p.m. PT Wednesday game, before returning to host the 30th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic.
On the docket for San Diego State at the Campbell/Cartier are Brigham Young at 6 p.m. PT Thursday, Southern Utah (4:30 p.m. PT) and Cal State Fullerton (7 p.m. PT) on Friday, and Brigham Young (4:30 p.m. PT) and Southern Utah (7 p.m. PT) on Saturday.
The San Diego State University Campbell/Cartier Classic is an annual event held in the memory of former Aztec softball players Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier. Campbell and Cartier lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program.
To pay tribute to Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, the San Diego State softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability. The 2020 tournament will be the 30th annual classic.
The Aztecs enter the Wednesday game at UCR (2 p.m. PT) with a 4-1 record, their best start since the 2014 season. That 2014 team went onto finish 40-19 (.678), won a Mountain West title and advanced to the NCAA Tempe Regional. It is tied for SDSU's fourth-best opening weekend start in program history (min. 4 games).
Shelby Thompson (.563, 1 HR, 7 RBI, .636 OB%) and Kelsey Munoz (.421, 3 2B, 4 RBI) lead a San Diego State offense that is collectively hitting .356 as a team.
The Aztec pitching staff, meanwhile, has posted a 2.60 ERA with all five pitchers having started a game apiece.
